The Questions Every Agent Should Ask Before Switching Brokerages
A practical checklist to help you make a confident career move—without guessing.
At some point, most real estate agents ask the same question: “Should I switch brokerages?”
Sometimes the reason is obvious—support is lacking, the culture feels off, or you’ve outgrown your current environment. Other times, it’s more subtle. You’re producing, but you’re not progressing. You’re busy, but you feel stuck.
If you’re thinking about making a move, it helps to slow down and ask better questions first. The goal isn’t to “switch” — the goal is to choose a place where your business can grow.
Start with this: What’s driving the change?
Before you compare brokerages, clarify your own priorities. Otherwise, it’s easy to trade one set of frustrations for another.
- Are you missing coaching and accountability?
- Do you need better systems, tools, or training?
- Is your current environment collaborative—or isolated?
- Do you feel like you’re building a business—or just chasing deals?
Once you know what you want to improve, the next questions become much easier to answer.
The questions to ask before switching
1) What does coaching look like here—weekly, monthly, and long-term?
Many brokerages say they offer “training.” Few can clearly explain what that looks like in practice.
Ask: Is coaching structured? Is it consistent? Who delivers it? How do agents stay accountable?
2) How does the brokerage help agents generate leads?
Lead generation solves a lot of problems. It creates confidence, pipeline, and options.
Ask: Are there proven models for prospecting and follow-up? Is there scripts practice? Do agents have a clear lead gen rhythm?
3) What systems are in place to help me build a repeatable business?
In real estate, consistency beats intensity. You want systems you can repeat in any market.
Ask: How do agents track contacts, follow-up, and pipeline? Is there a business planning process? What tools support that?
4) How would you describe the culture—collaborative or competitive?
Culture shows up in small moments: how questions are answered, how wins are celebrated, and how agents support one another.
Ask: Do agents share best practices? Is there a team-first environment? Can I talk to a few agents privately about their experience?
5) What kind of support exists when I’m in contract?
Strong support helps you protect the client experience—especially when a deal gets complicated.
Ask: Who helps with contracts and compliance? What happens when an issue comes up? How quickly can I get guidance?
6) What does growth look like for agents at different stages?
Some agents need help getting their first deals. Others need help scaling, hiring, or building a team.
Ask: What resources exist for agents at my stage? What does the brokerage do for experienced agents who want to grow?
7) How transparent are the financials—and what am I really paying for?
Compensation matters, but it’s not the whole story. A slightly better split can cost you far more if you lose structure and support.
Ask: What are the fees? What do they include? What tools, training, and support come with them?
8) If I join, what happens in my first 30–60–90 days?
The best brokerages can describe a real onboarding path. That’s a sign they’ve helped agents make transitions successfully.
Ask: What’s the plan? What are the expectations? How do you help me build momentum quickly?
A common mistake: making the decision based on one factor
It’s tempting to focus on one headline item—split, fees, or a single tool. But the better question is: Will this brokerage help me grow my business consistently?
A supportive environment with coaching, systems, and accountability can often create far more income than a small improvement in split ever will.
What to look for—if growth is your priority
If your goal is to build a long-term business, look for a brokerage that provides:
- Structured coaching and accountability
- Proven lead generation models
- Systems for follow-up, pipeline, and planning
- A culture that supports learning and collaboration
- Clear onboarding and a path for progression
Those elements don’t just help you close deals. They help you create momentum you can sustain.
